MASST
Unlock the next generation of small molecule discovery
What is MASST?
MASST is a revolutionary algorithm that allows you to search billions of mass spectra in seconds.
Unlock the dark matter of the metabolome with a tool that can take your analysis time from years to minutes.
How do I use MASST?
Discover new biomarkers
Uncover compounds associated with health and disease in seconds in over 19,000 tissue samples.
Optimize production
Rapidly identify microbes that produce your compound of interest. No structure required.
Assess distribution
Understand the distribution of novel compounds across the tree of life with detailed metadata.
Improve quality control
Track compounds across manufacturing lines, factories, and source material.
Understand the distribution of novel contaminants and trace sources of contamination.
Trace Contaminants
What is MASST searching?
Public Databases
MASST searches over 1 billion MS/MS spectra from public repositories. These include:
microbeMASST: >60,000 microbial monocultures
microbiomeMASST: >180,000 microbiome samples
tissueMASST: >45,000 tissue samples
plantMASST: >45,000 plant extracts
foodMASST: >3,500 food and beverages
personalcareMASST: 1000 personal care products
Pan-ReDU: >757,000 Files with sample metadata
>1 billion
spectra
(and counting)
Private Databases
In Ometa Flow, you can build your own MASST databases with public or private mass spectrometry data. These databases can be paired with custom metadata to track compounds across new and historical data.
Patented Tech
Ometa Labs holds exclusive patent rights from the University of California for the use of MASST and it’s metadata readouts. We’re always building tools to make it more powerful, faster, and user-friendly.
Ready to try it out?
MASST is included with all Ometa Flow licenses, but we are beta testing a standalone version to run MASST searches.

FAQs
-
At Ometa, we take data privacy very seriously. Custom MASST databases require storing a large amount of data, and while Ometa Flow allows for rigorous data privacy and security, standalone MASST does not. Thus, we do not save any data or results on the standalone MASST server after a search is complete. If you are interested in building a custom MASST database, please contact us for more information on creating a secure, private server.
-
We need the peak list for an MS2 spectra to perform the search, but we immediately delete all data and results after a search is complete. The only thing we track is the user who submitted the query.

Yes! Academics can run unlimited MASST searches for free through GNPS2 MASST. Contact the GNPS2 team to get started.

For the standalone server:
MASST searches MS2 spectra using a peak list. You can simply provide the peak lists in the user interface, or if you’re interested in submitting an entire MGF file, we recommend setting up a process through our API.
API access is restricted during our beta testing period, so please contact us if you want to get started.
In Ometa Flow:
Ometa Flow users can search MASST using peak lists, universal spectrum identifiers, MGF files, or entire molecular networks. Check out the workflow documentation or contact us to learn more.
